I work with educational systems across a range of improvement projects
I consult on significant system-wide projects that are explicitly designed to build teacher capacity across secondary schools. I work to identify the key areas of improvement that systems want to target, and then design and deliver projects that will not only support teachers to deliver improved outcomes for their students but also to sustain that improvement through communities of shared practice.
Whole-system projects only work if they are genuinely responsive to the needs and very specific contexts of the schools that they support. My work for systems comes from careful and considered research and conversations, as well as a flexible and responsive approach that adapts to address the needs and demands of the schools being supported.
I am pleased to announce that I will be I will be working in partnership with DOBCEL secondary schools in Semester 2, 2023 to enrich English learning experiences and teaching opportunities. At the heart of this project, my role will be to offer support to the remarkable educators in these schools, providing them with resources, strategies, and professional development opportunities to enhance their teaching practice.
Offerings
Implementing a whole-school disciplinary literacy strategy across a school system
Many schools report students who struggle to engage with learning and who no longer understand how they are supposed to read and write within those subjects. Explicit teaching and a focus on developing a self-sustaining whole-school literacy strategy enables teachers and schools to boost student performance and teacher capability.
I can create a program that your schools can follow which:
builds disciplinary literacy in all subject areas; and
empowers and trains teachers from 7 - 12 to explicitly teach the disciplinary literacy of their specialist subject.
These programs are designed to be at least 12 months long, and can include:
whole day and half day workshops, including expert presenters;
online seminars and training sessions;
resources for teachers and students, such as videos that show teachers how to apply teaching theory in practice;
individual school coaching and consulting;
curated professional readings.
Outcomes
System wide projects offer consistency and models of best practice. They build upon and strengthen the expertise of teachers and provide a self-sustaining network of shared learning and raised expectations of student performance.
Perfect for
Systems:
looking to improve student performance across schools;
with a significant number of new or inexperienced teachers;
that want their schools to be up to date with current thinking about pedagogy and literacy.
Building English teacher capacity across a system
Are you looking to improve the quality of English teaching across your schools?
I work with English teachers to improve their English teaching from 7 - 12, through:
explicit teaching of skills (grammar, inferential reading, sentence level writing, construction of extended pieces of writing);
sharing the most effective ways to use a range of texts for students;
incorporating up to date research about the ways that students learn;
building their confidence in the classroom and in their teaching;
understanding the requirements of state examinations and the best way to get students to succeed in them
enabling them to build courses from 7 - 12 that incrementally develop student capacity.
These programs are designed to be 6 - 12 months long, and can include:
whole day and half day workshops;
online seminars and training sessions;
resources for teachers and students, such as videos that show teachers how to apply teaching theory in practice;
curated professional readings.
